YOUCABULARY
Privacy policy
This draft describes the documented development build. The final release’s data practices and operator details must be confirmed before this policy is used for an App Store submission.
About this policy
Youcabulary is a language-learning app. This policy covers its core learning features, optional integrations and this website. Contact: contact@youcabulary.com.
Data stored on your device
The native app stores vocabulary, decks, chosen meanings, review history, learning progress, settings and imported material locally. Removing a deck does not erase the underlying learning history. The browser build has different storage and import limitations and should not be relied on as a durable backup.
Features you choose to connect
- Kioku: if configured, the app exchanges word identities, knowledge stages and learning observations with your configured Kioku endpoint. Its operator controls data held by that service.
- Image search and remote media: requested searches or downloads contact the chosen provider or source. Requests may include search terms and technical connection data. The default documented search provider is Serper.
- Google/YouTube history: an authorised and configured integration can import history through Google’s Data Portability API. Its OAuth token is stored in the operating system’s secure credential store.
- Experimental conversation: starting a personal-key conversation sends microphone audio, topic, teaching instructions and a bounded snapshot of known/mastered Japanese vocabulary directly to OpenAI. The documented prototype keeps the key in memory while the screen is open and does not save audio or transcripts in Youcabulary. OpenAI’s own data policies apply to its processing.
Device permissions
Features involving photos, camera capture or microphone audio require relevant device permissions. You can manage these in your device settings. Speech playback uses the device’s configured voice service, which may have its own network behaviour.
This website
This static website includes no analytics scripts, advertising trackers, forms or embedded third-party content. The site code sets no cookies or browser storage. When published on GitHub Pages, GitHub handles hosting requests and may collect technical logs under its own privacy statement. Contacting us by email shares your message and address with the recipient and email providers.
Retention, exports and deletion
Local learning records remain on your device until removed. Exports, backups and data sent to optional services are separate copies. To request help accessing or deleting data held by us, email the privacy contact above. Data held by your own Kioku server or another connected provider must also be managed with that provider. A final release policy will specify verified deletion steps and any operator-held retention periods.
Before release
The operator’s legal identity, release-specific service list, support contact ownership, retention periods and deletion procedures are pending confirmation. This policy will be updated to match the distributed app and its App Store privacy disclosures.
